“What I love about therapy is that they’ll tell you what your blind spots are. Although that’s uncomfortable and painful, it gives you something to work with.” Pink
The easiest person in the world to deceive is ourself, whether it is willful denial or trauma blocking. We know ourselves so well we can easily manipulate ourselves into believing things, ignoring stuff, or just not seeing issues.
This is why we need others. An external and unbiased reflection, a mirror that helps us see what we can’t.
A good therapist (or true friend) will listen and guide our attention so that we can start seeing things about ourselves that we didn’t see before. To draw our gaze towards the things we ignored, be they good or not so much.
Therapy can not make us see if we are unwilling to cast light upon the dark areas and look at them. But if we are willing to let truth shine and open our eyes, we can see a whole new self.
