The Men on the Wall

“People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.”  George Orwell

You might have hated Col. Jessep in A Few Good Men, but he was right.  We can sleep in peace at night because of men standing on that wall defending your rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.  Even to the point of being spat upon and disdained, the men on the wall serve to defend our ability to have barbeques and to complain about the lack of almond milk in the latte and even to debate the value of the wall.

Because when the horde shows up and those that were whining then realize the value of the men on the wall who put themselves at risk to shield the rest of us.  Those whose existence was thought grotesque and incomprehensible yet are critical to the defense of “normality” and society.  When the enemy is at the gates, the defenders are suddenly appreciated and extolled for standing against the threat of darkness.

You can sleep in your bed peacefully because someone else is willing to sleep on the rough ground and stand guard for you.  Thank them for their service and defense.
