“If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant;” Anne Bradstreet
65 degrees in September is chilly. The same sunshine breaking through the clouds and temperature in March is a welcome joy with the majority of those under 30 years old in shorts and outside if possible, basking in the warmth.
Perspective and experience matter.
If you have been in Hell for years, even Purgatory feels like Heaven by contrast. The bits of love another shows are amazing diamonds to a child that has only experienced abuse and these treasured moments of affection or respite are worth everything to these abused or ignored children.
Those who struggle appreciate the rewards afterward more than those who did not have to go through the battle to achieve it. The hard bunk after multiple months on the ground is a luxury, whereas those who were not in the field may complain about the very same conditions and chow. And those who have never served in the military would be horrified by the conditions that a vet accepts without question, because the warrior has experienced much worse and so is thankful for the little bits of comfort that are hard fought for.
The success of a company after years of doubt and sleepless nights, long hours of uncertainty yield rewards well beyond the financial as well as the ability to enjoy even the release of stress for a few days off post product launch or the hiatus post IPO after risking it all and sacrificing half a decade to create a life-changing work.
The writer that bangs away at the keys like one of the infinite monkeys, struggling to squeeze the words out of their soul and discarding draft after draft before being rejected again and again and again that finally gets the acceptance letter. That next dinner, that next day is effused with joy those who never toiled like they can never imagine.
Earned rewards are the greatest, and the striving creates appreciation others will never understand.
