False Freedom

“None are more hopelessly enslaved than those who falsely believe they are free.”  -Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

We all have that friend.  They insist that they only drink socially, or to take the edge off.  And they are secretly consuming a bottle and a half of wine a night on their own while in denial of the problem.

Or the one that says that they are not in an abusive relationship, that their partner didn’t really mean to hurt them, that it is their own fault for doing something.  And they lie to protect the monster harming them, physically or psychologically.

The divorcee insisting that they are enjoying their freedom to do what they want when they want that deep down misses the commitment and consistency that they are disparaging in their hedonistic binge.  They have traded one prison cell for one with a better view and a few more privileges, but they are still locked in.

The electorate falling for the illusion of choice, not realizing the left wing and the right wing belong to the same bird of prey that is feasting on them.

The illusion of freedom is the most comfortable and simultaneously dangerous cage ever created.
