Winter Wonder

“Winter is not a season, it’s a celebration.” – Anamika Mishra

Some of my friends that live in warm areas ask me why I would live someplace where we have foot plus snowstorms a few times a year, where the temperature drops below zero often, and the long nights can darken your mood and soul.

The wind can bite, but it contrasts with the crackle and warmth of the fire.

The sunlight off the snow and ice is blindingly beautiful.

After skiing or skating or sledding or snowshoeing, the heat of a hot mug of cocoa in your hands, cheeks ruddy from being outside and legs spent from the effort, relaxing and laughing and exulting in the feeling.

Curling up in a blanket on the couch, book in hand, listening to the howl of the wind outside knowing you are safe and cozy inside.

Snow days, where the kids sleep in and are awakened slowly and have half-speed breakfasts then go make snowmen while the soup slow cooks on the stove, filling the kitchen and the heart with scents and memories.

Winter is a time for delighting in the outdoors and then reconvening and recreating inside.
