“Strategy requires thought, tactics require observation.”
Max Euwe
The best laid plans of mice and men collapse upon contact with the enemy or reality, and it is then that speed and options and creativity come into play. Here it is where the keen observer sees the openings and opportunities to grab advantage on the battlefield or board, where the aware and aggressive player disrupts his opponent’s strategy and spirit and can win the day.
Forethought enables understanding of potential actions, but observation should unleash the appropriate one in the moment based upon the situation. Inability to execute in the moment shows a shortfall in comprehension or training. The fleeting window of opportunity must be shot through with no thought or hesitation when it appears, executed with extreme speed and ruthlessness to prevent unnecessary casualties on either side. Think deeply beforehand. But see and respond to win.
