“When humor goes, there goes civilization.” –Erma Bombeck
Celebrity roasts can be incredible. Someone who has had tremendous public success (and the accompanying failures and gaffes) puts them in a position to have the entire range of their professional output (and often personal components) put up for entertainment and laughter. It takes a strong sense of self to submit to this.
Something we see too infrequently these days is the average person being able to laugh at their foibles without getting triggered and complaining to some outside authority to have it rectified instead of laughing at themselves (and maybe giving it back as good as they got). The combination of self-awareness, internal strength, and humor in the face of the insanity of the world is a critical combination for society.
If we cannot laugh at others, if we can not laugh at ourselves, we are doomed.
